Cooking from scratch cheaper and better for you

Cooking from scratch is more pleasurable

Chefs passionate about their range of inspirational recipes may be encouraged to hear that consumers seeking good value are more likely to be cooking from scratch.

This is according to Sainsbury's Magazine and television presenter Lorraine Kelly, who noted that cooking from scratch is "cheaper and much, much better for you".

She claimed that as people are searching for value for money, they are looking to cheaper foods, rather than more expensive luxuries such as chocolate and wine and extolled the virtues of the onion in particular.

"Onions are fantastic when you want comfort food, if you want to make something that is actually going to make you feel better and is very warming," she remarked, adding that this was particularly relevant to the forthcoming winter months.

Sainsbury's Live Well for Less Index recently found the top five foods in terms of amount of pleasure relative to cost are onions, carrots, baked beans, potatoes and apples.
