Smoothies should not have too much banana

Cherries are a good ingredient for smoothies

Chefs looking for new flavour ideas for smoothies should try to avoid using too much banana, it has been suggested.

Nutritionist Fiona Kirk explained shop-bought options are often guilty of this and cheaper varieties are usually over-processed.

She suggested using older fruit that may be slightly bruised as these blend very well and the expert also advised the use of vegetables as an alternative to fruit.

Ms Kirk said green leaves, lettuce, spinach and water cress are all well-suited to this drink and are a good source of nutrients.

"A smoothie has got to be really tasty and full of good nutrients; berries and cherries are the richest in vitamin C and antioxidants, but a good cross section of fruits is good," she commented.

Earlier this year, Food Network dietitian Ellie Krieger stated almonds are an ideal ingredient to add to smoothies, adding the nuts are generally simple to implement in a wide variety of dishes.
