Cook squid in five spice seasoning chefs advised

Squid can be cooked with Chinese five spice seasoning

Cooks wondering what culinary seasonings to cook with squid could try using Chinese five-spice.

This has been suggested by celebrity chef Nigel Slater, who shared his ingredients for the dish in the Observer.

"I used small, whole frozen squid for this, but you could use larger ones, sliced into manageable pieces, too," he commented, advising people to make sure all the tentacles are thoroughly cleaned.

Chillies and garlic are then added to a mixing bowl with the five-spice seasoning and salt and crushed peppercorns.

These ingredients are put in a pan of hot oil and the squid is patted into this to be coated by the flavourings.

After frying until opaque, sesame oil and coriander are tossed with the meat, which is best served with chopped limes.

Slater recently suggested preparing squid with garlic and ginger for a stir-fry recipe in the Observer, recommending the food is still smoking when it is shared among the required amount of plates.
