Herbs make popcorn the next major hit

Culinary herbs breathe new life into the cinema favourite snack

Food experts are saying that popcorn could soon be the snack of choice for parties and events, thanks to the addition of culinary herbs.

New preparation techniques mean that the cinema favourite has less calories and can now pack interesting flavours.

Marks & Spencer has become the first supermarket to launch its own range of "gourmet" popcorn, according to a report by the Independent.

This new range sees the snack flavoured with paprika, sea salt, black pepper, curried coconut and even chocolate and caramel.

"We first spotted big-flavoured, low-fat popcorn in San Francisco last year," commented Matt McAuliffe, product development manager.

"As we are such a nation of cinemagoers, we knew it was likely to suit British palates. Though we've given it an adventurous flavour makeover, while keeping the salt and calorie content as low as possible."

Popcorn is now seen as a healthier alternative to crisps, with start up company Peter Popple Popcorn marketing its fruit chutney and golden syrup flavours at kids.
