Thyme is ideal in omelettes

Omelettes can really benefit from the addition of culinary herbs

Culinary herbs are a very versatile ingredient for caterers to turn to and can often turn the most basic of meals into an unmissable menu offering.

McCormick's resident expert Chef Steve says this is one of his favourite things about them, adding that it is clearly more interesting than adding salt.

Indeed, celebrity chef Nigel Slater recommended the use of thyme in the preparation of an omelette recipe he shared in the Guardian.

While salt and pepper are used as seasoning, lemon thyme is used as a key ingredient alongside goat's cheese.

He explained the cheese "is perfect for this", adding: "Ideally it needs to melt slightly in the heat of the grill. Use the smallest frying pan you have."

Simple dishes such as this are not to be overlooked by catering professionals, as they can make an excellent light bite for diners who are not that hungry - or even a breakfast option.
