Oriental recipes a favourite of French chef

Oriental recipes will be on offer at the new restaurant

A French chef who has just opened a new restaurant in London's Leicester Square has spoken of his love of Asian food.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten - who holds three Michelin stars - will be serving Oriental recipes at Spice Market and said in an interview with Bloomberg that he has been fascinated with Asian creative cuisine from an early age.

"The dishes come from across Asia, though Thai is still my favourite. I arrived in Bangkok in 1980: I was 23 years old and it changed my life," the 53-year-old remarked.

Spice Market is located inside the new W Hotel and Mr Vongerichten, who has not run a restaurant in the capital since closing Vong in 2003, noted he is delighted to return.

"It feels amazing to be back in London," he commented, adding Asian food has "always been part of the culture" for people living in the city.

Scottish chef Isaac McHale recently told the Scotsman about his love of spices, saying he spent time in the local Indian supermarket as a child, learning about the variety of different ingredients.
