Basil ideal for pizzas pasta and pesto says expert

Basil is a versatile herb

Basil is an essential ingredient for those making homemade pizzas and pasta, it has been suggested.

According to the Borneo Post, the herb is also vital for making pesto and is commonly used in adventurous recipes such as Thai food.

For Italian and Spanish cuisine, oregano is an important item, the writer continued, adding the herb - which is sometimes known as wild marjoram - has previously been used as an antiseptic and a cure for respiratory problems and sore throats.

Chives add flavour to omelettes, salads and soup, the writer noted, while thyme can be used to make stuffing and act as a complement for chicken or fish recipes.

Daily Telegraph writer Francine Raymond recently said herbs are perfect for winter dishes, suggesting adding sage to mushrooms, lemon rind, garlic and pine nuts, a mixture that can be served with either game or poultry.

She urged cooks to use them "enthusiastically" in the colder months to give meals colour and texture.
