School canteens can provide healthy options

School canteens can provide healthier options than lunch boxes

Caterers responsible for the production of school meals may be able to take advantage of demand for healthier eating habits among children.

Research from Innovate found only seven per cent of typical lunch boxes that kids take to school with them comply with food standards.

It was found 42 per cent of the surveyed children had brought unhealthy snacks such as crisps with them and chefs could provide healthier options that may be more appealing.

This could be part of a wider trend towards an increased awareness of what youngsters eat, as a study recently conducted by the NPD Group indicated there is increased demand for healthier food to be served in schools.

"Food brought from home was less healthy than the food provided by the school canteen, whose menu is required to meet such standards," commented registered public health nutritionist Robert Hobson MSc adding variety is just as important as nutritional concerns.
