Rich tomato sauce with herbs will be an ideal winter warmer

At this time of year, most people want to eat rich, warming dishes and cooks will be busy trying to come up with new recipes to satisfy them.

However, it might be worth going back to basics and serving up a delicious tomato sauce with pasta and perhaps meatballs too.

Jane Hornby from BBC Food pointed out that this will be quick and easy to make - plus it can be prepared in batches and frozen - but is really tasty, particularly if plenty of culinary herbs are added.

She said she uses five garlic cloves and a large bunch of basil, but dried will work equally well and is faster.

Ms Hornby recommended putting the garlic and basil in a large pan with some oil, then allowing it to sizzle for a minute. Two tablespoons of tomato puree and a tin of chopped tomatoes can then be added with a pinch of sugar before the sauce is seasoned generously with salt and pepper.

Simmer this for five minutes and then add a little more basil at the end if you like.
