Herbs and spices can be used to replace salt in dishes

Culinary herbs and spices can be used to replace the salt content of many dishes without sacrificing taste, according to one dietician.

In an article for the Daily Herald, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association Toby Smithson explained many individuals are consuming more than the recommended daily intake of salt, due partially to the habit of seasoning food with the condiment once it has been prepared, as well as during the cooking process.

She noted use of the ingredient can be reduced through the addition of either fresh or dried herbs, which can keep home-cooked foods "full of flavour".

Ms Smithson - who is also a diabetes expert and founder of - advised sprinkling rosemary on chicken and vegetable dishes and adding thyme leaves to potato salads, scrambled eggs and sauteed mushrooms.

For a healthy alternative to using butter and sour cream on a baked potato, she suggested mixing oregano with a teaspoon of olive oil.
