Expert discusses health benefits of turmeric

Culinary spices can be beneficial to an individual's wellbeing, while also being used to flavour food, it has been explained.

In an article for the Niagara Gazette, doctor of naturopathy and certified nurse midwife Catherine Stack - who has her own practice - discussed the health properties of turmeric.

As well as being an antioxidant, the aromatic spice is a "powerful" anti-inflammatory, she stated.

"Turmeric is very high in beta-carotene and has been very effective in treating those with joint inflammation," Ms Stack noted.

She also pointed out that both colon cancer and the progression of Aids can be lowered using turmeric, which is most commonly used to bring a colourful element to curries.

"Studies have shown it to be beneficial in reducing the size of breast cancer tumours," the expert added.

This advice comes after research conducted by Penn State and published in the Journal of Nutrition found spices can minimise the negative responses the body has to eating a high-fat meal.
