Locally produced food has many benefits says expert

Chefs may prefer to use local produce

Professional chefs making creative cuisine and coming up with new recipe ideas could benefit from using locally produced ingredients.

Katherine Darling from charity the Plunkett Foundation explained that if food from the region is used in dishes, it supports local growers and provides them with a reliable source of income.

Furthermore, there are also social benefits, she explained.

Some local food is produced through community supported agriculture projects, which means a number of people from the area are getting involved and helping to support their region's economy.

"Eating local food means you have absolute peace of mind in terms of knowing your food has no air miles and is not contributing to the wider global pollution problems," Ms Darling added, which could be an idea hotels and restaurants are keen to promote to their diners.

Last month, the expert pointed put that according to a study conducted by the Making Local Food Work programme, two-thirds of consumers would like to take a more active role in how their food is produced.
