US city celebrates Herb Day

Herbs can be used in variety of foods and drink from ice cream to tea

The US city of Gahanna in Ohio is celebrating culinary herbs and spices in its May Herb Day on Saturday, May 21st.

Valerie Hamill, director of the Ohio Herb Education Centre, said this year's theme was the "herbal kitchen" with activities designed to promote the use of herbs such as thyme, sage and rosemary.

However, the featured herb this year is horseradish, which the group will use in a unique ice cream recipe.

"I hate horseradish, but the horseradish ice cream is the creamiest and most delicious ice cream," she told Columbus Local News.

In addition, the event will showcase the various ways herbs can be used in foods and drinks.

"We'll also have gourmet syrups to sample and heirloom vegetable plants available," she said. "They are bringing vegetable plants that could be traced back to George Washington's table."

Also attending will be author Jennifer Bartley, who will be on hand to sign copies of her book The New Kitchen Gardener's Handbook.
