Spicy treats call for ginger and cinnamon

Ginger and cinnamon are included in the recipe

Culinary spices can be used to make one recipe for some "satisfying" treats that could be served with both sweet and savoury accompaniments.

Alicia Berns has contributed instructions to the Star Tribune telling people how to cook up some ginger and spice squares.

They are given their sharp flavour using cinnamon and ground ginger, as well as nutmeg and the optional addition of some ground cloves.

The rest of the recipe calls for ingredients such as whole-wheat pastry flour, baking powder and butter, while barley malt syrup, blackstrap molasses and unsweetened applesauce are also required.

According to the news provider, these "intriguingly, dark, malty, gingery bars are rich tasting and satisfying".

It noted that while they work perfectly with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, a "slice of sharp cheddar cheese" also goes well.

A recent article published in the Guardian advised that vanilla is a versatile flavour that can be used in a variety of different recipes.
