Restaurants will be hurt by fat tax

some restaurants could be subjected to a so called fat tax

The introduction of a so-called fat tax could have a negative effect on takeaway restaurants in the UK, one industry body has warned.

Such a levy looks set to be introduced across Oldham and director of the Nationwide Caterers Association Bob Fox described the proposed move as "completely unfair".

"It's just another stealth tax really, another way of getting money out of small businesses, which can ill afford it these days," he remarked, adding obesity should be tackled through health education in schools, rather than a tax.

Mr Fox added that while healthy eating is recommended, diet "comes down to public choice".

Improved recipe ideas for school meals could be one way of getting young people interested in eating healthier food.

Restaurants may also need to pay greater attention to the nutritional value of their foods, as new research conducted on behalf of Amadeus revealed they will have to provide information on how healthy dishes are in 2011 as diners become increasingly concerned about their diets, according to Eat Out magazine.
