Ground cinnamon used in wholewheat plum tart recipe

It is not just savoury dishes people can experiment with when looking for ways of using culinary spices.

As part of a mini-series on using traditionally milled flour, Dan Lepard - a regular Guardian contributor who has a recipe published every Saturday in the newspaper's Weekend magazine - explained how to make wholewheat plum tart.

Butter, honey, baking powder, wholemeal stoneground flour and dark brown sugar are required for this recipe, as are five ripe plums and sieved plum jam to top the mixture.

This is brought together with the use of some ground cinnamon, which adds a kick to the dessert.

Individuals can also complement the pud by whipping up some double cream, adding brown sugar to taste and then topping it off with two of three tablespoons of sherry, Mr Lepard stated.

Writing for the Independent recently, Rebecca Hardy discussed ways of swapping sugar for spices to make desserts a little healthier.
