Expert believes spices give coffee an extra kick

Spices can be added to coffee to give it a kick

People may not usually think to put culinary spices in their coffee, but according to one expert, this could do them the world of good.

Phil Lempert, a food industry analyst who created the supermarketguru.com website, believes adding these flavourful ingredients to the drink can improve its qualities, UPI.com reports.

He said that because spices are full of antioxidants that have the potential to keep people looking younger, they may make coffee healthier and enhance the perky feeling individuals get from drinking it.

Mr Lempert also gave details of a recipe for Autumn Apple Coffee, which requires the drink to be freshly brewed before being combined with pure apple juice, two cinnamon sticks, two whole cloves and ground allspice.

Two slices of orange with the rind and two teaspoons of brown sugar or wildflower honey are needed as well.

Gastroenterologist Dr Nick Read recently claimed certain spices, such as turmeric and cumin, are also beneficial to a person's health because they can help to calm the gut.
