Enjoy a Halloween treat for grown ups with pumpkin roll cake

Many caterers will have been working out ideas for Halloween-themed goodies over the past few weeks, but why not make some grown-up treats for the spooky festival too?

Pumpkins are not just for making lanterns out of and when combined with culinary herbs and spices, they can create really autumnal recipes that are seasonal, tasty and fun.

Owner of Bloom Baking Company Janet O'Toole told the Chicago Tribune she likes to make pumpkin roll as a dessert for this time of year, using spiced batter and a cream cheese and butter filling.

Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are added to pumpkin flesh and then combined with eggs, flour, sugar and baking powder for a twist on traditional cake mixture.

Instead of being baked in a round tin, this is then spread out flat on a tray so it can be rolled up with the filling once it is cooked.

However, other popular autumn-themed ingredients highlighted by Martha Stewart and our own resident expert Chef Steve include honey, pear, saffron, cranberry and molasses, so why not have a go at creating your own signature dishes this Halloween?
