Soul Kitchen opened by Jon Bon Jovi

Soul Kitchen opened by Jon Bon Jovi

Chefs of creative cuisine may be interested in the unveiling of Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen, which opened its doors this week.

Diners can pay a suggested donation for their meal, or have the option of undertaking voluntary work to earn their food.

The restaurant - run by the JBJ Soul Foundation - opened at a permanent location in Red Bank, New Jersey, after pilot schemes assessing responses to the model were launched in 2009.

Bon Jovi noted one in five US citizens are below the poverty line and one in six cannot guarantee a consistent food budget.

"This is a restaurant whose time has come. This is a place based on and built on community - by and for the community," the celebrity remarked.

Jamie Oliver also opened a new eatery earlier this year - the 18th branch of his Italian eatery in Cheltenham - albeit with a more conventional payment structure.
