Cooks wondering what culinary herbs might add excitement to a pasta dish could try sauteing rosemary, thyme and a bay leaf for a pasta e fagioli.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recommended this recipe in the Guardian and explained "it's easy to fall for this gutsy soup".
"Dean Martin crooned - when the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore - using the American-Italian slang for this dish," he explained, adding the delicious simplicity of this dish made the analogy a good one.
Preparation involved heating the rosemary, thyme and bay leaf in a pan with oil before adding carrots, celery and garlic.
Bacon was then introduced with slightly mashed tomatoes, beans and stock.
A cupful of the vegetables and beans were removed to be pureed in a blender before being returned to the heat and seasoned with the rest of the ingredients.
Fearnley-Whittingstall's serving suggestion was to pour the meal into warmed bowls and stir in grated parmesan.
Food writer Rose Prince recently shared a similar pasta e fagioli dish with pancetta twists in the Daily Telegraph.
