Salt and pepper needed for ale crust potato pasties

Potatoes can provide a filling for ale crust pastries

Those looking for flavour ideas for pie dishes might want to try an ale-crust potato pastry.

This has been suggested by award-winning professional baker Dan Lepard, who shared his recipe in the Guardian.

Preparation involved making dough by mixing butter, flour and salt in a bowl then stirring in Newcastle brown ale.

A filling was made by boiling onions in a pan of salt and water until the water evaporates and the onions begin to fry.

When the onion is soft, cream and diced potato are added to the pan and left to cool after seasoning with salt and pepper.

Dough is then cut into rectangular shapes and brushed with water before the filling ingredients are spooned on and topped with cheese, then the dough is sealed and chilled prior to baking.

Editor of Amateur Gardening magazine Tim Rumball recently claimed potatoes are easy to grow at home as they can be planted in bags of soil.
