Familiar dishes more popular in hard times

Chefs using culinary herbs may be wondering how to tailor their dishes to changes in taste brought about by the current economic climate.

In such conditions, people tend to "hunker back to familiar, home-produced food", according to Alexia Robinson, who hosted the British Food Fortnight that ran from September 17th to October 2nd.

She claimed greater consideration is being put into the price of food and consumers are spending more time looking for cheap deals as a result.

Individuals may also be more likely to cook at home, Ms Robinson stated, adding this is good news for the meat, fruit and vegetable industry.

"I expect to see a continuing move to cheaper cuts of meat and more robust support for seasonal produce which is always cheaper," the expert remarked.

Television presenter Lorraine Kelly and Sainsbury's Magazine recently suggested cooking from scratch is preferable to ordering a takeaway as it is cheaper and healthier.
