How to recreate the aromas of Christmas markets in your kitchen

Bring the festive markets to your kitchen

Many of the UK's towns and cities are currently hosting Christmas markets and people flock here to tuck into their favourite festive cuisines.

These events can provide chefs with inspiration, so make sure your cupboard is well stocked with ground cinnamon, nutmeg and other seasonal flavours to recreate the markets' atmosphere in your own kitchen.

A slice of stollen will go down a treat with a steaming mug of hot chocolate or eggnog sprinkled with nutmeg. This German cake is heavy but delicious, with some of its main ingredients being cinnamon, almonds, cherries and marzipan.

Another Christmas market favourite is mulled wine, and this is very easy to make, so you should ensure you always have a pot of this simmering on your stove.

To really impress those who drink it, be certain to add cloves, orange peel and cinnamon sticks into the mix. This will not only make it taste great, but will provide a welcoming aroma across your eating area.

Our chef Steve is a big advocate of making the most of herbs and spices to bring out the flavours of meat, and hot turkey, beef and pork sandwiches always prove popular at Christmas markets.

Paprika is fantastic for rubbing into the skin of pork joints, for example, and also works well in large bowls of steaming paella.
