Sausages and onions are guaranteed to work in a stew

Use sausages to make a quick and tasty stew

Sausages and onions are a flavour pairing that is always guaranteed to work in cooking.

This is according to chef patron at Murano restaurant Angela Hartnett, who shared a recipe for a stew that combined these ingredients with kidney beans in the Guardian.

She explained the dish was inspired by food prepared in her student days and is "simple, quick and tasty", only taking 20 minutes to make.

Oil is heated in a pan, in which the sausages are coloured evenly prior to being set aside.

Chilli and onion are sauteed in the same pan before the sausages are returned to the mixture with tinned tomatoes.

Ms Hartnett recommended simmering and adding kidney beans before heating through when the meal is nearly ready, finally topping with freshly chopped oregano or sage.

Professional chef Stevie Parle recently suggested the use of fennel and thyme to flavour an autumnal vegetable stew in an article for the Daily Telegraph.
