Travelling through time and food

Travelling through time and food

The history of food is surely as extensive and complex as human history itself.

Few human topics - other than gastronomy - have origins that stem beyond the written word and even civilization.

So tackling the history of food in a single tome is no mean feat - but one that has been attempted by several excellent authors.

The latest culinary expert to have a go is William Sitwell, who has penned A Histroy of Food in 100 Recipes.

What makes this a tempting by for budding chefs with a good selection of culinary spices is that it offers practical cookery from the history books.

So if you already have the odd Jane Grigson masterpiece on your bookshelf, but are looking for something to take you back to antiquity, you could be heading in the right direction.

One of the best things about Sitwell's book is the scintillating commentary that accompanies each recipe - making it a must-read.
