Government launches Food is Great campaign

Government launches Food is Great campaign

With Food Revolution Day just a couple of weeks away, culinary spices and fresh ingredients are at the top of many people's agendas.

So it is hardly surprising that the coalition government has set its sights on promoting good food itself.

The best British chefs - and other influential figures in the restaurant industry - will attend 10 Downing Street tonight as part of the Food is Great initiative.

Led by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, the 150-strong group will celebrate the role that food plays in attracting tourists from overseas.

Commenting on the initiative, prime minister David Cameron said: "I am hugely proud of Britain's food industry and we're launching Food is Great to showcase what we have to offer."

He added that British farmers produce some of the best quality produce on the planet, which is used by the country's vast array of talented chefs.

"From sticky toffee pudding from Cartmel to oysters from Whitstable, salt marsh lamb from North Wales, or smoked salmon from Scotland our food is key to our cultural identity," Mr Cameron proclaimed.

Last month, top chef Tony Borthwick praised the Edinburgh Feast 2012 festival, telling STV Local that public events are a great way to promote the industry.
