Asian spices lead Pacific Rim Festival

Sacramento fair celebrates spices in Asian dishes

Adventurous recipes from Asia were on display at the 19th annual Pacific Rim Street Festival in Sacramento, California.

The festival is based on a different single word theme each year and this year's event is centred around spices, with a focus on the central role of food in Asian cultures.

"You get the flavour of the day by smelling all the enticing spices," said event chairwoman Merlayna Yee-Chin.

According to the Sacramento Bee, as many as 35,000 people turned up to enjoy the culinary delights, which included kebabs made of Hmong sausage and seasoned with coriander, ginger and garlic.

Also at the event, a local restaurant taught passersby how to make a masala sauce from scratch.

"Cloves, cardamom, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, onions and tomatoes," explained Kamesh Vedula. "We're trying to recreate the magic of Indian food in Sacramento."
