Spice up meatballs with Asian ingredients

Spices are the perfect flavouring for meatballs

Asian spices can be used to bring unique flavour pairings to dishes that would otherwise be basic and lacking in character.

For instance, Yotam Ottolenghi - chef and patron of Ottolenghi and Nopi in London - advised the use of ground cinnamon, cumin and turmeric in an article for the Guardian.

Chef Steve - McCormick's resident expert - says one of the key benefits of these ingredients is their ability to bring out the natural flavours of other foods.

Indeed, Mr Ottolenghi suggested preparing the meatballs with lemon and celeriac for a taste that is "sharp yet very comforting".

Preparation involved mixing beef with onions, breadcrumbs, parsley, egg and allspice in addition to salt and black pepper to form kebab shapes for the meat.

After sauteing these in a pan the culinary spices are added and left to simmer, with the professional's final serving suggestion being to add seasoning to taste, a sprinkling of parsley and "a dollop of yoghurt".
