Parsley is a key ingredient in chicken pie

Herbs can be used as a key ingredient in pies

Culinary herbs are often used as a supplementary ingredient to really enhance the flavour of other elements of a dish.

However, certain varieties can be used as a key ingredient in their own right, particularly in savoury offerings such as pies.

For instance, celebrity chef Nigel Slater suggested a chicken, leek and parsley pie in a recipe he shared with the Guardian.

He recommended this is made in large portions, which means it could lend itself perfectly to a sharing option for diners, serving with plates and letting them tuck in themselves.

"Use cooked, roasted chicken if you wish, but this is something worth roasting your chicken pieces for," he commented.

Preparation involved cooking the filling separately from the pastry, before spooning it into the dish and baking in an oven.

The pastry can be left to hang over the sides of the dish, cutting slits in the tops to allow the heat to escape.
