Herbs and spices can lead a recipe

Culinary spices can be put to a wide range of uses, often being used in new combinations to create distinctive flavours and unusual twists on old favourites.

Indeed, McCormick's resident expert Chef Steve says one of his favourite aspects of the ingredients is their versatility - being applicable to everything from spicy soups to sweet pudding options.

However, they can also be used to lead a recipe and create something wholly original, which can really keep your diners coming back for more.

In an article for the Guardian, chef and patron of Ottolenghi and Nopi in London Yotam Ottolenghi recommended making green chilli oil to mix with sauce and cover over fried vegetables.

"I had a terrific meal at Hamdi in Istanbul. It's famed for its kebabs... but it was a glorious mix of fried vegetables in yoghurt that stole the show for me," he wrote, adding culinary herbs such as cumin and parsley into the sauce as well.
