Culinary spices are great in stir fries

Chillies are fantastic in a stir fry

Culinary spices are a great addition to almost any meal, being widely noted for their versatility and application to everything from savoury soups to certain pudding dishes.

However, they can also be a key ingredient on their own, used to characterise the nature of an entire dish.

Indeed, Angela Hartnett - chef patron at Murano restaurant and consultant at the Whitechapel Gallery and Dining Room in London - recommended the use of chillies with chicken and honey in a stir-fry.

When sweet and spicy ingredients are used in this way, the precise amounts can be adjusted according to tastes - so more intensely hot versions can be offered to diners.

This could also satisfy those with a sweet tooth who may not wish to stretch to a dessert with the addition of extra honey.

"The beauty of this dish is that it's so quick and easy and you can spice it up as much or as little as you want," Ms Hartnett commented.
