The Spice Trail television series on BBC Two has inspired one writer to incorporate culinary spices into her meals.
Writing for the Eastern Daily Press, Sarah Brealey explained the ingredients have helped improve dishes during the cold English winter, noting she recently cooked a chilli with black-eyed beans that featured cumin, coriander and smoked paprika.
"It was warm rather than fiery, but the spices were all-important in giving depth of flavour to the otherwise slightly bland beans," she remarked.
Spices also have their uses in sweet dishes, Ms Brealey observed, stating she sampled some apple strudel cake in a cafe that was "lifted" by the sweet cinnamon it contained.
She observed that the show, which ends this Thursday (March 3rd), has given an insight into the world behind culinary spices, covering destinations as far afield as Sri Lanka and the island of Run.
Kate Humble of Springwatch presents the show and has also travel to India to learn more about pepper, as well as to Indonesia to look for nutmeg and cloves.
