Spices used in cinnamon and apple cake

Cinnamon and nutmeg are added to apples for the recipe

Some simple flavour pairings are used to give one dessert its slightly spicy flavour.

The Edinburgh Evening News has encouraged readers to give baking a go in their own homes and suggested cinnamon and apple cake as one easy recipe to try.

Vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg are all required for the mixture, as well as raisins, Demerara sugar and soft brown sugar.

About six grated apples are also needed, along with eggs, self-raising flour and a pinch of salt.

According to the publication, the cooked cake can be filled with a mixed spice butter cream icing or a similar spread made from lemon and cream cheese.

It added: "Decorate as elaborately as you can to suit the occasion. Eggs, chickens, daffodils or bunnies for Easter, perhaps?"

Some vanilla ice cream could be used as an accompaniment for this dessert, as the Guardian recently advised individuals to have a go at making their own frozen treat.
