Mediterranean recipes could lead to a healthier diet

Mediterranean food has many health benefits

Mediterranean recipes could be the perfect choice for those who wish to make their diet a little healthier.

According to nutrition consultant Dr Carina Norris RNutr, studies show there are links to this kind of food and a reduced risk of strokes, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

She highlighted olive oil and oily fish such as mackerel and sardines as being particularly beneficial to the body as they help to reduce cholesterol levels.

Dr Norris also pointed out that eating a lot of fruit and vegetables that are rich in fibre aids digestion and helps individuals to maintain a healthy weight.

"Plus, having fish in preference to red meat would cut our intake of saturated fat, also putting us less at risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer," the expert added.

Her comments come after a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology noted a Mediterranean diet can also have a positive impact on blood pressure levels and glucose metabolism.
