Global spice market set to grow

Demand for spices is set to rise

The world's spice market is set to expand in the coming four years as diners show a growing desire to sample more creative cuisine, report has indicated.

According to the study by Global Industry Analysts, the condiments, sauces, dressings and seasonings industry is set to reach a value of $72 billion (£46 billion) by 2015.

It suggested that more people are interested in finding "local flavours" in products - potentially to try out some modern British recipes - but that consumers are increasingly looking for good value for money with regards to food.

Europe and Asia-Pacific were identified as two of the biggest and most influential markets for culinary seasonings and other condiments, although Latin America was forecast to exhibit the greatest growth by 2015.

Last month, Kat Hannaford asserted in an article for the Daily Telegraph that having a wide range of seasonings in a kitchen can be an effective way of "jazzing up" the flavour of dishes.

She identified basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, nutmeg and curry powder as the basic essentials for a good spice rack.
