Garam masala vital when making mulligatawny soup

Garam masala is used when making mulligatawny soup

Garam masala is a key ingredient in mulligatawny soup, which can be an ideal dish to serve up during the colder months.

This is according to Katie Scarvey, writing for US newspaper the Salisbury Post, who described soup as "the perfect winter dish" thanks to its warmth and the health benefits it offers.

She explained she had been meaning to try mulligatawny - for which there are numerous recipe variations - since it was mentioned in an episode of the US sitcom Seinfeld.

"One of the important ingredients is a spice called garam masala," Ms Scarvey remarked, noting she favours McCormick's variety, which includes black pepper, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon and coriander.

"I will admit, this soup is a good bit of work, but the results are worth it," she concluded.

Jill Silva, in an article for, recently recommended garam masala grilled chicken served with naan bread as a dish that makes use of the spice blend, which is becoming more popular on the US market.
