Figures suggest school dinner demand is on the increase

Demand for school dinners is on the increase

Demand for school dinners appears to have increased following an effort to get children more interested.

National School Meals Week (NSMW) took place in November 2010 and Caterersearch reports the majority of institutions saw an increase in take-up, with many seeing it sustained in the following weeks.

Establishments may have taken the opportunity to use adventurous school recipes to persuade kids to eat healthy meals and a survey showed three-quarters experienced a rise in meal numbers.

Over 60 per cent said this continued after the promotion finished and 55 per cent found numbers were still up a month later.

Meanwhile, the number of local authorities getting involved in NSMW increased by more than eight per cent compared to 2009, while a total of 366 schools took part - compared to 214 the previous year.

Fish recipes could become a more prominent feature on school menus over the coming years, as Emma Marsden recently wrote for All About You that campaigns and television programmes will be successful in making seafood more popular.
