Britains restaurants one of the countrys great strengths

Sandie Dawe has praised Britains restaurants

Britain's high-quality restaurants and hotels are one of the "great strengths" of the tourism industry, the chief executive of VisitBritain has stated.

Speaking at the Master Innholders' annual hotel general managers' conference in London, Sandie Dawe said that although the country is facing many challenges in remaining competitive in the global tourism industry, the standard of hospitality - along with "our heritage and culture" - is not one of them, reports.

"There are many reasons why we have fallen behind, particularly with the cost and difficulty of getting visa and aviation capacity," she was quoted as saying.

Ms Dawe called on hoteliers attending the event to ensure the government follows through with its pledges to support tourism, which was described by then shadow chancellor George Osborne as the UK's "jewel in the crown" in a speech prior to the general election last year.

Oksana Higglesden of People 1st recently noted the 2012 Olympics will boost visitor numbers, helping to create new employment opportunities in the hospitality sector.
