Summer wouldnt be the same without tarts

The British summer has a few really strong food associations. When Wimbledon rocks around strawberries become the dessert of choice - whether they are served fresh with cream or on a delightful cheesecake.

And when it comes to savoury dishes, the humble cheese tart has to be one of the most popular choices.

It is easy to cook, can have an endless array of culinary herbs and spices in it, and can be served with a light salad to make a healthy summer meal.

Every cook worth their salt knows how to make a mean savoury tart, and celebrity chef Nigel Slater is no different.

Writing in the Observer, the culinary expert suggested a straightforward recipe for a goat's cheese tart with a hint of lemon thyme.

Starting with a puff pastry base, the delicious savouries can be prepared and cooked in less than 30 minutes.

But it is well worth experimenting with other flavour combinations - such as Lancashire cheese and asparagus or cheddar and onion.
