Recipes rich with essential fatty acids boost brain health says expert

Fish is a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids

Creative cuisines with good ingredients are essential for keeping the brain healthy, according to Efamol, specialists in essential fatty acid-based products.

Nancy Morse, senior scientific officer at the company, explained that recipes that are rich in Omega 3 can slow down memory loss.

"Good nutrition, in particular fish oil components such as DHA [docosahexaenoic acid], is vital for normal brain function," she said.

"In the UK, we currently consume less than half the suggested daily intake of DHA, and research has shown that people with lower than normal levels of DHA, have a greater tendency to experience memory problems as they age."

Penny Doyle and Audrey Deane, authors of Top 100 Omega-3 Recipes, suggest people try their trout in herb crust.

Served in sauce enriched with parsley, coriander and basil, the trout dish provides a healthy dose of the fatty acid.

According to Netmums, other sources of Omega 3 include rapeseed oil, organic milk, and flaxseeds.
