El Bulli to close

El Bulli is to close its doors after redefining modern cuisine

El Bulli, the Spanish restaurant that helped redefine modern creative cuisine, is set to close at the end of this month. 

The world-famous restaurant represented a tour de force of culinary creativity, helmed by its famed chef Ferran Adria.

Chef Adria quickly made a name for himself for finding unique uses for standard foods and garnishes, from cinnamon and black pepper through to curry powder.

"It is impossible to say too much about his influence," Carme Ruscalleda, who holds the record for the most Michelin stars awarded to a woman, told the New York Times.

"He was the first one to tell the chefs of Spain we could think for ourselves."

One of the founding fathers of molecular gastronomy, Mr Adria plans to reopen El Bulli as a research foundation that will publish its findings online for free.

"I'm not a multimillionaire, but I don't have to work anymore, and I knew that it was time to take a break and then do something different," explained Mr Adria.
