Pistachios may support weight management efforts

Pistachio nuts are low in calories

Weight-loss hopefuls who are looking for inspirational recipes may want to consider dishes that contain pistachio nuts, new research suggests.

According to scientists at Eastern Illinois University, the low-calorie nuts may have benefits for those trying to manage their weight.

Their study, which is published in the journal Appetite, found that the empty shells can provide a visual cue to help people reduce their intake of food.

However, the same benefits are not seen by those using pistachios that have already been shelled.

Study author Dr James Painter claimed: "Choosing in-shell pistachios instead of shelled nuts is a simple way to decrease calorie consumption without restriction."

Food fans may like to try the combination of pistachios and cranberry sauce in their cooking, as the ingredients go well together.

Pistachios and cranberries can also be teamed together in a delicious stuffing to accompany chicken or turkey, combined with butter, onion, breadcrumbs, bacon bits, sausagemeat, sage and mixed spice.
