Jalfrezi emerges as nations favourite curry

Jalfrezi is now the nations most popular curry

The reign of chicken tikka masala as the nation's favourite curry dish appears to be over, as a new poll suggests that people prefer the culinary spices and flavours in jalfrezi.

Research by Chaat!, the in-house magazine of the British Curry Club, found that 21 per cent of respondents preferred jalfrezi - a hotter dish containing green curries - to any other curry.

The poll of 1,058 people revealed that madras was in second place, taking 18 per cent of the vote, with Rogan josh in third with 11 per cent.

Surprisingly, chicken tikka masala only crept into eighth place.

Chaat! editor Dave Jenkins told the Daily Telegraph: "It's really interesting to see that jalfrezi has topped the list.

"Being a spice lover myself, I think this is great news. People have been depending on the milder curries for too long now, so it's great to see some more adventurous dishes topping the list."

People who want to try making a jalfrezi at home will find a wealth of recipes on the internet, including one provided by TajRecipe.com.

For this recipe, the shopping list will include chicken, ginger, garlic, onions, green peppers, hot green chilies, tomatoes and tomato puree, as well as turmeric, garam masala and chili powder.
