Chefs given American pie recipe

Apple pie can be seasoned with cinnamon or nutmeg according to cookbook author

Cookbook author Richard Ehrlich has released a series of traditional inspirational recipes in celebration of American independence day.

In his article in the Guardian, the food expert started with a recipe for apple pie, telling cooks to line a pie dish with dough, pare some apples and lay the slices on the pastry.

Mix some brown sugar, salt and ground cinnamon or nutmeg and sprinkle it over the apples, followed by lemon juice and zest. Finally, cooks are advised to dot the interior with butter, seal it over with some more dough and decorate the outer layer with sliced apples.

Once that's done the pie is ready to be baked for ten minutes at 230C and then reduce the heat for a further 30 minutes at 180C.

Americans in California recently celebrated July 4th by making the world's biggest hamburger, which weighed in at 777lbs.
