New guidelines launched for caterers

Caterers could be supported when serving healthier school meals

Chefs of creative cuisine may have to adapt some of their recipes to meet new guidelines that have been released.

Support has been made available to those who provide school meals in an effort to promote healthy eating among children.

Information is provided regarding recommended portion sizes, in addition to some sample menus and recipes.

Children's minister Sarah Teather asserted the guidelines - which are voluntary - will benefit kids' lifestyle, stating it is quite right parents want what is best for their offspring in this regard.

"Healthy eating is at the heart of helping every child get the best start in life," she remarked, adding that many providers "lack the expert knowledge of what is the best food to serve".

Culinary herbs may be a useful resource for caterers who wish to take advantage of this initiative and they are also a favourite of McCormick's resident expert Chef Steve, who notes many of them offer health benefits.
