Govt grants caterers price promotion powers

Promotions could benefit caterers and pupils

Caterers who work in schools may be able to reduce the price of their meals in order to bring their inspirational recipes to a wider range of children.

New powers have been granted to this sector, which make it possible to incorporate school meal deals.

It is hoped this will increase the uptake of school lunches and enable greater competition with takeaways, which can target pupils with cheap lunchtime deals.

Chief executive of the Children's Food Trust and the School Food Trust Judy Hargadon noted children perform better academically if they develop healthier eating habits, adding there are also benefits for the caterers.

"Price promotions do increase take up in the long-term, so while a school wanting to run a really big promotion will have to invest to cover the cost, it will pay back," she remarked.

Another way chefs can help nurture a better lifestyle among children is to buy locally sourced produce, according to chief executive of the Countryside Alliance Foundation Alice Barnard.
