Combat a tough 2012 with food offerings

The London Olympics could be a good opportunity to show off creative cuisine

In economically challenging times, caterers could be concerned about how to best promote their creative cuisine in a way that will keep customers coming back.

Horizons Food estimates the food service sector was down between three and five per cent in 2011 and expects conditions to be similarly difficult over the next 12 months.

However, one way in which this could be challenged is by introducing unique recipes to coincide with the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Indeed, organiser of the British Food Fortnight Alexia Robinson recently claimed this year's run of her event will be held in tandem with the sporting one, recommending chefs up their game and show off how wonderful national dishes can be.

She also noted this could be the only opportunity to offer the official Olympic cake due to marketing restrictions.

"The Olympic Games are likely to bring an uplift in sales for some foodservice outlets - most notably those with contracts at Olympic venues," commented managing director at Horizons Peter Backman.
