Spices help make a tart with a difference

Cinnamon is a key ingredient in this apple and pistachio tart

Cinnamon can be used in a range of dessert recipes to bring unique flavour pairings to tarts.

Celebrity chef Nigel Slater recommended the use of the culinary spice in an apple and pistachio variety of the classic pudding in an article for the Guardian.

Indeed, McCormick's resident expert Chef Steve says one of his favourite aspects of herbs and spices is their versatility and the fact that they can bring out the natural taste of other ingredients with a new twist.

Professional caterers looking to introduce new dessert options to their menu could take inspiration from this and apply some of the techniques to their own dishes.

Slater recommended tossing cored apples in cinnamon, sugar and orange juice before baking in order to prepare his dish.

This filling is then laid out on pastry and topped with pistachio nuts, heating until the fruit turns a pale gold colour and brushing any juices over the finished product.
