Cumin mingles very well with other spices

Cumin is a great spice for tying disparate ingredients together

Chefs looking for new flavour ideas involving a unique mix of African spices may wish to try combining cumin with other ingredients.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall explained it "mingles very well with other spices", adding chilli, citrus and garlic are also good options.

Indeed, McCormick's resident expert Chef Steve says one of his favourites aspects of culinary spices is their versatility - with many combinations really bringing out the natural flavours in various foods.

Fearnley-Whittingstall made a similar remark, claiming cumin is ideal for "raid-the-fridge cookery", as it is often all that is needed to bring disparate ingredients together.

He also said it is most familiar to Brits as a flavouring for curries, but is also a seasoning for other hot meals, such as north African merguez sausages.

"Cumin finds its way into many of the dishes I cook these days - homemade hummus and dips, of which I am inordinately fond, nearly always get a pinch," he commented.
