However, this can present the caterers with some difficulties as to how they can go about setting their offerings apart from the crowd.

One great way to do this is by experimenting with different combinations of culinary herbs and spices.

Our resident expert Chef Steve says that the kind of versatility offered by these ingredients is one of the many reasons he counts them among his favourites.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, gardener and cook at Petersham Nurseries Lucy Boyd suggested preparing roast potatoes with fennel.

This could be the ideal fit for Christmas meals, as it is a simple but effective method of bringing a new take to the classic side serving.

However, chefs should not be afraid to try experimenting with their own combinations of new flavour pairings.
